Day of the Dead Ofrendas
Day of the dead ofrendas
On View: October 23 - November 15
The 2024 Dia de los Muertos Exhibit will center on expanding our community's understanding of this deeply cultural and historic celebration. Partner schools from southeastern Wisconsin, local artists, and community organizations along with the Mexican Consulate in Milwaukee will showcase authentic Ofrendas which are traditional altars commemorating family members that are not longer physically with us but forever present in our hearts.
We will highlight the widely popular way this tradition is celebrated in regions in Mexico and explore the elements within the traditions that tell the story of the fusion that took place when the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs. Our programming will illustrate how time has codified folk art into a reflection of culture and heritage with in the traditon. Our observance of the Day of the Dead tradition will also expand our community's understanding of the celebration by exploring how its celebrated outside of Mexico in countries like Guatemala where the indigenous heritage is influenced by Mayan ancestry versus Aztec as it is widely recognized as this celebration continues to grow in popularity.
